Put a product on sale in Shopify with a compare-at price (2026)
What you’ll have at the end
A product in your Shopify store with its sale price saved as the Price and its original price saved as the Compare-at price.
Shopify's help says both amounts can be displayed on product pages and collection pages, but only the sale price is displayed at checkout. It also says whether and where sale prices show on your storefront depends on your theme. For example, your theme might add a badge with a message or percentage off.
Before you start
You’ll need
- A Shopify store you can sign in to, with the product already added
- The product's original price and the sale price you'd like to charge
- If the product has variants, which variants you'd like to put on sale
What it costs. Shopify's sale pricing help doesn't list a charge for setting a compare-at price.
Please have the product already added to your store, and decide on two amounts: - The original price. This goes in Compare-at price. - The new, lower price customers will pay. This goes in Price.
Shopify's help gives an example: a t-shirt that sold for $30 goes on sale for $10. The Price becomes $10 and the Compare-at price becomes $30.
Shopify's help asks you to make sure the Compare-at price is higher than the Price, so that the sale price is displayed.
Shopify's help says using sale prices is different from setting up discounts. If you'd rather customers enter a code at checkout, see "If something looks different" below.
This guide uses the Shopify admin in a web browser on a computer.
Steps
1. Go to Products
Sign in to your Shopify admin and go to Products.
2. Click the product
Click the product you'd like to put on sale.
3. Click the variant, if your product has variants
If your product has variants, such as sizes or colours, please go to the Variants section and click the variant you'd like to put on sale.
If your product has no variants, please go on to step 4.
4. Click Compare at
In the Price section, click Compare at.
5. Enter the original price in Compare-at price
In the Compare-at price field, enter the original price, for example 30.
6. Enter the sale price in Price
In the Price field, enter the new price, for example 10. Please check that it's lower than the Compare-at price.
7. Click Save
Click Save. Your product's sale price is saved. If your product has other variants you'd like on sale, please repeat steps 3 to 7 for each one. This guide ends here.
If something looks different
- If a product with variants doesn't show as on sale on a collection page, Shopify's help says this happens when compare-at prices are inconsistent across variants, such as some empty, some $0.00, or different amounts. It suggests either clearing the conflicting compare-at prices, or making sure each one is higher than that variant's price. It says product pages show the compare-at price of the variant that's selected.
- To end the sale later, open the product or variant again, enter the price you'd like in Price, clear the Compare-at price field, and click Save. Shopify's help says a compare-at price of $0.00 isn't the same as an empty one, so please clear the field entirely.
- If the sale price doesn't show on your storefront, Shopify's help says this depends on your theme, and sale price styling can often be changed in your theme settings. It suggests your theme's documentation or its developer for help.
- To change many products at once, go to Products, use the checkboxes to select them, and click Bulk edit. Shopify's help says the table's columns include price and compare-at price. Click a field to change it, then click Save.
- To change several variants of one product at once, open the product, select the variants with the checkboxes in the Variants section, and click Bulk edit.
- If you sell internationally with fixed prices, Shopify's help says fixed prices override the prices and compare-at prices set in your Shopify admin. It says fixed sale prices for international markets are added by importing prices with a CSV file, not in the Shopify admin.
- If you'd rather customers enter a code at checkout, that's a discount code, which Shopify's help covers separately. Shopify's help says discount savings show as a crossed-out price at checkout, and that showing them that way on product and collection pages needs a third-party discount app or a custom build.
