Create a discount code in Shopify (2026)
What you’ll have at the end
A discount code saved in your Shopify store. Customers type the code at checkout to get the amount off you set, on products or on their whole order, within the limits and dates you choose.
Shopify's help says amount off discounts give a fixed value or a percentage off the products in an order, and don't apply to shipping costs.
Before you start
You’ll need
- A Shopify store you can sign in to
- The code customers will type, without special characters
- Whether the discount is a percentage or a fixed amount, and its value
- Any minimum purchase amount or quantity you'd like to require
- How many times the code can be used, and its start and end dates
What it costs. Shopify's discount help doesn't list a charge for creating a discount code.
Please decide what the discount takes off: - Amount off products takes the discount off products, either all of them or the products and collections you choose. - Amount off orders takes the discount off the order.
Please have ready the code customers will type, and whether the discount is a percentage or a fixed amount. Shopify's help asks you to avoid special characters in the code name, so that it's added correctly to your store's checkout URL.
You can also decide on a minimum purchase, how many times the code can be used, and the dates it's active. Each of these is optional except the start date.
This guide uses the Shopify admin in a web browser on a computer.
Steps
1. Go to Discounts
Sign in to your Shopify admin and go to Discounts.
2. Click Create discount
On the Discounts page, click Create discount.
3. Choose Amount off products or Amount off orders
From the Select discount type menu, click Amount off products or Amount off orders.
4. Select Discount code under Method
Under Method, select Discount code. This means customers type the code at checkout.
5. Enter your code in the Discount code section
In the Discount code section, type the code customers will enter, for example 15offnecklaces. If you'd rather have Shopify make one, click Generate code instead.
6. Set the discount in the Value section
In the Value section, select Percentage and enter a percent, or select Fixed amount and enter an amount of money.
7. Choose products or collections, if you'd like to
This step is for Amount off products only, and it's optional. In the Applies to section: - To discount specific products, select Specific products, and then add your products. - To discount specific collections, select Specific collections, and then add your collections.
If you chose Fixed amount and specific products or collections, you can check Only apply discount once per order, so the code is used only one time per order.
8. Set a minimum requirement, if you'd like to
This step is optional. In the Minimum requirements section, select one of these: - Minimum purchase amount, then enter the amount customers must spend to qualify. - Minimum quantity of items, then enter the number of items customers must order to qualify.
Shopify's help says the minimum purchase amount counts product prices only, without shipping costs and taxes. For Amount off products, only the selected products, or products in selected collections, count towards it.
9. Choose who can use it in Eligibility
In the Eligibility section, select All customers to let any customer use the code. To offer it to fewer people, see "If something looks different" below.
10. Limit how often it's used, if you'd like to
This step is optional. In the Maximum discount uses section, check either or both: - Limit number of times this discount can be used in total, then enter the total number of uses. - Limit to one per customer. Shopify's help says it tracks this by the customer's email address or phone number.
11. Choose Combinations, if you'd like to
This step is optional. In the Combinations section, check the classes of discount that customers can combine this code with. Shopify's help says that when discounts can't be combined, the best discount for the customer's cart is applied.
12. Set the Active dates
In the Active dates section, set the start date. Then: - To end the discount on a date, click Set end date and choose the date. - To keep the code from expiring, don't set an end date. - For a one-day discount, choose the same day for the start date and the end date.
Shopify's help says the start and end times follow the time zone selected in your Shopify admin.
13. Click Save
Click Save. Your discount code is saved. This guide ends here.
If something looks different
- If you'd like the discount to apply without a code, select Automatic discount under Method at step 4. Shopify's help says automatic discounts are applied in the cart and at checkout when the conditions are met.
- To offer free shipping instead, choose Free shipping from the Select discount type menu at step 3. Shopify's help treats it as its own discount type, with its own steps.
- If your store sells subscriptions, you may see Purchase Type after step 6. You can select One-time purchase, Subscription or Both.
- In Eligibility, you can also select Specific customers, Customer segments or Markets, choose who should get the code, and click Add.
- Shopify's help says a discount code can apply to up to 100 specific customers, products and variants.
- To change the code later, go to Discounts, click the discount, change its settings, and click Save. Shopify's help says you can also deactivate a discount that hasn't expired.
- Shopify's help says a code applied at checkout doesn't apply to post-purchase offers.
