Sell gift cards in your Shopify store (2026)
What you’ll have at the end
A gift card product saved in your Shopify store, with the amounts customers can choose from. Customers can buy it in your online store like any other product.
Shopify's help says that when you fulfill an order with a gift card, the customer or gift card recipient receives an email with the digital gift card code.
Before you start
You’ll need
- A Shopify store on a Shopify subscription plan that you can sign in to
- A name and a short description for the gift card
- The amounts you'd like to sell it in, each greater than zero
- The currency for the gift card, usually your store currency
- Whether the gift card can be used at checkout in other currencies
What it costs. Shopify's help says gift cards are available on all Shopify subscription plans and lists no separate charge for a gift card product. For newer stores, it says orders paid with a gift card are charged third-party transaction fees on the amount paid with the gift card.
Shopify's help says "Gift cards are available on all Shopify subscription plans."
Shopify's help also says: - "By using gift cards, you are agreeing to Shopify's gift cards terms of service." - "Laws and regulations about gift cards vary based on region. To determine any regulations that apply to you, such as whether to charge tax or for how long a gift card must stay valid, consult a local tax or legal expert."
Please decide the amounts you'd like to sell. Shopify calls these denominations. Shopify's help says customers can't enter a custom amount for a gift card in your online store, and that a denomination can be any amount greater than zero, up to $10,000 USD or the equivalent in your local currency.
Please also decide whether customers can use the gift card at checkout in a currency other than the one it was issued in. Shopify's help says you can't change this after the gift card product is created.
This guide uses the Shopify admin in a web browser on a computer. It ends when you save the gift card product.
Steps
1. Go to Products > Gift cards
Sign in to your Shopify admin and go to Products > Gift cards.
2. Click Add a gift card product
Click Add a gift card product.
3. Enter a Title
In Title, type a name for the gift card product.
4. Enter a Description
In Description, type a description of the gift card to show in your store.
5. Add an image in Media, if you'd like to
This step is optional. In Media, upload an image for the gift card.
6. Check the Currency
In Currency, select the currency for the gift card. Shopify's help says the default is your store currency. If you'd like a gift card in another currency, see "If something looks different" below.
7. Choose Cross-currency redemption (can't be undone)
Shopify's help says: "You can't change this setting after the gift card product is created."
In Cross-currency redemption, choose whether customers can use the gift card at checkout in a currency other than the one it was issued in.
8. Set the denominations
Shopify's help says a new gift card product starts with several denominations in your store currency. Please change them to the amounts you'd like to sell: - To change an amount, replace it with the amount you'd like. - To add an amount, click Add denomination. - To remove an amount, click the trash can icon beside it.
Shopify's help says a gift card product must have at least one denomination.
9. Check Sales channels and apps
In Sales channels and apps, please check that the gift card is available on Online store, so customers can buy it there. Shopify's help says you can click the calendar icon beside Online store to choose a date for it to be published.
10. Click Save gift card product
Click Save gift card product. Your gift card product is saved. This guide ends here.
If something looks different
- To give a gift card to one customer without selling it, go to Products > Gift cards and click Create gift card. You enter its Initial value and the customer, click Save, and then click Send gift card. Shopify's help says these gift cards can be up to $2,000 USD or the equivalent in your local currency.
- Shopify's help says: "Gift cards created directly from your Shopify admin or from Shopify POS can't be refunded, as no payment was captured for those gift cards."
- Shopify's help says that if you refund a gift card a customer bought, it's automatically deactivated, and that "Deactivating a gift card is permanent."
- To sell a gift card in a currency other than your store currency, Shopify's help says you need markets and catalogs set up with that currency first. It says these gift cards aren't published to any catalogs by default, so you need to publish one to the right catalog before customers can buy it.
- Shopify's help says gift cards don't expire by default, because it's illegal in some countries for them to expire. The setting is in Settings > Payments, under Gift card expiration. Shopify's help asks you to check your country's rules for gift cards before you change it.
- To offer a gift card for less than its value, Shopify's help says to use a discount code or an automatic discount, and not the Compare-at price field.
- To change the gift card product later, go to Products > Gift cards and open it. Shopify's help says editing, archiving or deleting a gift card product doesn't affect gift cards already issued.
