List your Shopify products on Google with Merchant Center (2026)
What you’ll have at the end
The Google & YouTube app installed on your Shopify store, a Google Merchant Center account connected to it, and your products sent to Merchant Center for Google to review. Shopify says that when the app is first set up, all the products available to your online store sync to Merchant Center automatically.
Google says products synced this way can appear for free across Google, such as the Shopping tab, Google Search, Google Images and YouTube, once they're approved. Google also says products aren't guaranteed to show. This guide covers free listings only. It doesn't set up paid ads, and it ends at Google's review, which is a wait.
Before you start
You’ll need
- A Shopify store on a paid plan, with its online store open to the public (not password-protected)
- A payment provider added in your Shopify admin
- A refund policy and terms of service, linked in your store's footer menu
- At least one way to contact you (email, phone, address or a contact form) on a page of your store
- A Google Account, or you can create one during setup
- A phone that can receive a text message
What it costs. Shopify's App Store lists the Google & YouTube app as "Free to install. Additional charges may apply." Google says synced products can appear across Google for free.
Step 7 spends money. Each is marked, and whether to go ahead is your decision.
The app is made by Google and is called Google & YouTube. After you install it, Shopify shows it under Sales channels in your admin.
Your store has to meet Google Merchant Center's requirements. Shopify lists them: - an online store that isn't password-protected - a valid payment provider in your Shopify admin - a refund policy and terms of service, in your store's footer menu - at least one contact method (email, phone, mailing address or a contact form) on a page customers can see - shipping to a country Google supports, in that country's currency
If any of these isn't done yet, the app shows a checklist at step 7 with a link beside each item.
Google's free listings help says your store needs to sell in a supported country or region for products to show for free. The page lists the countries.
Each Merchant Center account can connect to only one Shopify store at a time.
Steps
1. Sign in to Shopify
On a computer, sign in to your Shopify store's admin.
2. Click Install on the app's listing
Go to apps.shopify.com/google. The listing is called Google & YouTube, by Google LLC. Click Install.
3. Confirm with Install
On the Install app screen, Shopify shows what store data the app can view and edit, and a link to its privacy policy. Please review them, then click Install.
4. Open the channel
If the app isn't already open, go to Sales channels > Google & YouTube in your Shopify admin.
5. Click Connect Google Account
Click Connect Google Account, then select a Google Account or create a new one. If you already have a Merchant Center account, Google asks you to use the same Google Account you manage it with, and that account needs super admin access.
6. Choose or create your Merchant Center account (can't be undone)
If you connect a Merchant Center account that already has a product feed, Shopify says the app overwrites that feed. A new account has no feed to overwrite.
- If you have a Merchant Center account, select it from the drop-down menu and click Connect. If several accounts are listed, please check you've picked the right one.
- If you don't have one, click Create new. Google says to do this only if you don't already have a Merchant Center account.
7. Meet the store requirements (may ask you to choose a paid plan, and for bank details)Spends money
This step spends money. Whether to go ahead is your decision, and you’re welcome to stop here.
You can pause screen sharing while you fill in this page, and continue afterwards.
The app shows a checklist of requirements for your store. For each item that isn't done, click the link beside it, complete the task in Shopify, and come back.
Two of these items can ask for money or personal details: - Removing the password from your online store. Shopify's password help says that if your store is on a trial plan, or doesn't have a business address yet, Shopify asks you to choose a plan or add the address before you can remove the password. Choosing a paid plan is your decision. If your store is on a trial, please stop here until you've decided. - Adding a payment provider. Shopify says the information needed to set up Shopify Payments depends on the country your store is based in, and its help lists the requirements for each country, including for your bank account.
8. Enter your phone number
In the Verify it's you section, enter your phone number, select your country from the drop-down menu, and click Get code. Google asks for the number listed as the main contact number for your business and website.
9. Click Verify
Enter the 6-digit code you receive by text message, and click Verify.
10. Check your country and language
Check the target country and language the app shows. If you'd like to choose them yourself, click Manage in the Countries and Languages section, then click Turn off in the Automatic sync section, select your countries and languages, and click Save.
11. Choose your shipping settings
If the app asks for shipping settings, choose one: - Automatically import settings copies your Shopify shipping rates. Shopify says this needs a shipping zone for that country in your general shipping profile. - Manually set up shipping settings in Google Merchant Center means you'll add your rates in Merchant Center yourself.
12. Choose your checkout link setting
Choose whether people who click your product on Google go straight to checkout on your store. Google's help says you can choose not to include a link to checkout, and you can change this later in the app's settings.
13. Agree to the terms
Please read the terms and conditions shown, and agree to them if you're happy to.
14. Click Complete setup
Click Complete setup. Google says a product sync starts once your Merchant Center account is connected and the required product information is in place.
15. Skip Google Ads for now
The app may offer to connect a Google Ads account or set up a campaign. Ads cost money, and Google says a Google Ads account needs valid billing information to run campaigns. Free listings don't need Google Ads, so please skip this offer. Whether to advertise later is your decision.
16. Check your products
In the Google & YouTube channel, select Products, then All products. Each product shows a status: - Under review: changes in Shopify that haven't synced yet - Approved: synced to Merchant Center - Limited: partly synced because of errors or missing data - Not approved: not synced because of errors or missing data
For a product that's Not approved or Limited, please check what's missing. Shopify lists common fixes: add a description, add at least one image, and add a barcode (GTIN), or a brand and MPN for products without one.
Shopify's setup help says the first product sync can take up to 24 hours. Shopify's syncing help says Google reviews new products within 3-5 business days after the first sync. Google's product status help says reviews may take up to 3-5 business days for Shopping ads and a few weeks for other features, such as free listings. This guide ends here, at the wait.
If something looks different
- Google's install help names the install button Install to continue. It's the same step.
- If the app says your domain is claimed by another Merchant Center account, Shopify says you can transfer the domain claim to the account you connected to Shopify.
- The app can link only to a stand-alone Merchant Center account, Google says.
- Shopify says product options, including variants, need to be in English to sync with Google.
- To choose which products sync, change each product's availability to the Google & YouTube channel in Shopify. A product must also be available to your online store.
- For problems with your Merchant Center account, Shopify asks you to contact Google, not Shopify Support.
