Create a Buy X get Y offer in Shopify (2026)
What you’ll have at the end
A Buy X get Y discount saved in your Shopify store as an automatic discount. Shopify's help gives the example of a free hat when a customer buys any T-shirt.
Shopify's help says automatic discounts are applied in the cart and at checkout when the eligibility conditions are met, so customers don't type a code.
Shopify's help also says: "Customers must add all items to their cart manually. The free or discounted 'get' item is never automatically added to the cart."
Before you start
You’ll need
- A Shopify store you can sign in to
- The products or collections customers must buy, and how many or how much
- The products or collections customers get, and how many
- Whether the items they get are free, a percentage off, or an amount off each
- The start date, and an end date if you'd like one
What it costs. Shopify's discount help doesn't list a charge for creating a Buy X get Y discount.
Please decide two things: - What the customer buys. Either a number of items or an amount of money, from the products or collections you choose. - What the customer gets. How many items, from the products or collections you choose, and whether they are free, a percentage off, or an amount off each.
Shopify's help says the minimum purchase amount counts product prices only, without shipping costs and taxes, and that products count towards it at their full price, before any other discount is applied.
Shopify's help says you can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts, and that this total includes app-based discounts.
This guide uses the Shopify admin in a web browser on a computer.

If something looks different
- If you'd rather customers type a code, select Discount code under Method at step 4. In the Discount code field, enter a name for the code, or click Generate random code. Shopify's help says customers then add all applicable products to their cart and enter the code at checkout.
- A discount code also has a Maximum discount uses section, where you can check Limit number of times this discount can be used in total or Limit to one per customer. An automatic discount doesn't show this section in Shopify's steps.
- In Eligibility, you can also select Specific customers, Customer segments or Markets. For Specific customers, choose the customers and click Add.
- If you sell in person with Shopify POS, you may see Apply on POS Pro locations after step 5. Shopify's help says automatic discounts apply only to retail locations with a POS Pro subscription. On the POS Lite plan, Shopify's help says Buy X get Y discounts can be used only in your online store checkout.
- You may see a Tags section before Save. It's optional, and helps you filter your discounts list.
- Shopify's help says all products that are part of a Buy X get Y discount are ineligible for further product discounts. When discounts can't be combined, it says the best discount or combination of discounts applies to the customer's cart.
- Shopify's help says Buy X get Y discounts created in the Shopify admin don't apply to the post-purchase page at checkout.
- To change the discount later, go to Discounts, click the discount, change its settings, and click Save. Shopify's help says you can also deactivate a discount that hasn't expired.
