Add Google Analytics to your Shopify store (2026)

4 min read

What you’ll have at the end

Your Google Analytics 4 property connected to your Shopify store through the Google & YouTube app. Shopify says that after you set this up, certain ecommerce events are tracked automatically.

Before you start

You’ll need

  • A Shopify store and access to its admin
  • A Google Analytics 4 property with a web data stream
  • The Google Account you use for that Google Analytics property

What it costs. Google says you can integrate your Shopify account with Google Analytics for free.

You need a Google Analytics 4 property with a web data stream for your store. If you don't have one yet, please follow the guide "Set up Google Analytics on your website" until your web stream is created, then come back here. Please stop before pasting the ID or adding any code; on Shopify, you connect the property through the app instead.

Please sign in to Shopify with an account that can install apps. If you're a staff member rather than the store owner, Shopify lists the permissions you need to install this channel, including Manage and install apps and channels and Manage settings.

Shopify says you can set up Google Analytics without a Google Merchant Center account.

Shopify also says Google Analytics can't track events until you deactivate private mode for your online store. During a free trial, Shopify says your store is automatically in private mode, and Shopify's launch help lists selecting a subscription plan as one of the steps before you launch. Choosing a plan is your decision, and this guide doesn't cover it.

Steps

  1. 1. Sign in to Shopify

On a computer, sign in to your Shopify store's admin.

If the Google & YouTube channel is already installed, for example because you list products on Google, please go to step 5.

  2. 2. Open the app's listing

Go to the Shopify App Store, search for Google & YouTube, and click the app's listing.

  3. 3. Click Install

On the app listing page, click Install.

  4. 4. Confirm with Install

On the Install app screen, Shopify shows the data and areas of your store the app needs access to, and its privacy policy. Please review them, then click Install.

  5. 5. Open the channel

In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Google & YouTube.

  6. 6. Click Connect Google Account

Click Connect Google Account, then select the Google Account you use for your Google Analytics property.

  7. 7. Click Get started

In the Looking only to set up Google Analytics 4? banner, click Get started.

  8. 8. Select your property

In the Connect a Google Analytics property section, select your property from the drop-down menu.

  9. 9. Click Connect

Click Connect. If you're asked to confirm, click Confirm. Shopify says you can disconnect this property at any time by clicking Disconnect.

Google's setup help says data collection may take up to 30 minutes to begin, and that you can then use the Realtime report to check that data is arriving. This guide ends here.

If something looks different

  • Google's help names the install button Install to continue. It's the same step.
  • Google's help calls the banner at step 7 the Just want to set up Google Analytics 4 section. It's the same banner.
  • If you don't have a property yet, Shopify says you can click Create new at step 8, and then create a property in Google Analytics.
  • If you can't connect your property this way, for example because you don't have the right access, or you'd like to send data to more than one property, Google's help describes adding your Google tag by hand instead: in the app, open Settings, click Manage in the Google tags section, add your tag, click Save, then click Complete setup. Google says connecting the property, as in this guide, is strongly preferred.
  • If your store also has conversion tracking added through its storefront or a custom pixel, Google asks you to check that you don't have duplicate tags.
